GERMANY, UNIVERSITY OF SIEGEN, "EUROPE AND THE WORLD: THE EU’S EXTERNAL POLICIES", 8 & 9 DECEMBER 2011

"I really appreciated the three days at the University Siegen. The discussion and workshops with the students and Professor Averkorn were very good and my feeling is, that they have now a better understanding of the European  Union, the EP and ESCP."

FRANCE, STRASBOURG, SIXTH SUMMER UNIVERSITY OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, 29 JUNE 2011

"The greatest threat to any democratic regime is internal breakdown caused by distrust amongst the electorate. This happens if citizens feel that their elected representatives, who are supposed to be acting in the public interest, are using the privileged position conferred on them by the ballot box for their own gain, rather than for those they are meant to protect."

UNITED KINGDOM, UNIVERSITY OF MIDDLESEX, FEBRUARY 2011

"In early February 2011 I responded to a request made to the Former Members Association for someone to speak to a group of students at Middlesex University, London on the workings of the EU with a particular emphasis on social inclusion, inequalities and international education. The university accepted my offer to speak and I visited on 16th February. [...] My talk was preceded by a presentation from those students who had been on the Brussels visit. They spoke enthusiastically about their experiences of seeing and meeting staff of the European Commission, the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament. They gave an excellent presentation, accompanied by slides and charts illustrating the work and inter-relationships of the three institutions. I was impressed not only by their very good grasp of the functioning of the EU, but by their positive attitude to it."
