Traditionally seen as a principal substitute for the use of force and the ultimate way to peace and reconciliation, diplomacy’s significance in times of war could not be underestimated. Ever since the outbreak of Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine, the EU diplomacy has conveyed powerful messages in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Through diplomatic efforts, the EU has provided Ukraine with humanitarian, political, financial, and military aid, has built strong pro-Ukrainian coalitions and sustained the passivity of potentially hostile powers. A wide range of passages, from protest to menace, dialogue to negotiations, ultimatum to reprisal, has been applied to curtail the aggressor’s ability to wage war.
The roundtable discussion has cover a variety of activities implemented by the EU in the field of public, economic, energy, cultural and other types of diplomacy not only to give justice to the EU’s unprecedented support of Ukraine, but also to question the diplomacy’s limits and potential blind spots with regard to the war’s origins and initial phase (the occupation of Crimea and Donbass region by Russia in 2014).
