The EUI School of Transnational Governance (STG) delivers teaching and high-level training in the methods, knowledge, skills and practice of governance beyond the State. Based within the European University Institute in Florence, the School brings the worlds of academia and policy-making together in an effort to navigate a context, both inside and outside Europe, where policy-making increasingly transcends national borders.
The STG, the Department of History and Civilization and the Historical Archives of the European Union developed the European oral history programme “Leaders Beyond the State”. The FMA is co-operating on this project, in which a series of interviews with former Presidents from European institutions have being taking place. These interviews will be included in the Historical Archives of the European Union and will contribute not only to the ongoing oral project on the history of European integration but also to the current debate on the future of the European Union.
The project will continue over the coming years. All living former Presidents of the European Parliament will visit the EUI to record their rich experiences as leaders in transnational government. Each President will privately record reflections on their time in office as part of an oral history project on the history of European integration at the Historical Archives of the European Union. They will also deliver a public lecture and respond to questions.
Former EP and FMA President, Enrique Barón Crespo privately recorded his reflections on 22 October 2018 and delivered a public lecture on 23 October 2018.
The Spain’s Foreign Minister, former President of the European Parliament and FMA member, Josep Borrell was interviewed on 31 May 2018.
The current President of the FMA and Former President of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering was interviewed on 12 December 2017.
